At Senshikai karate we teach a traditional form of Japanese Karate. Karate is a martial art based on principles of self defence and self improvement that developed in Okinawa, Japan.
Translated originally as Chinese hand, karate draws influences from Chinese kung fu but in the modern era karate is translated to mean empty hand, describing the skill of defending ones self without weapons.
Karate uses a holistic approach to self defence combining both striking and grappling. Drawing from influences from both Chinese and Japanese martial arts Karate incorporates many different techniques.
Our style of karate, Shotokan is one of the four major schools of karate practiced all over the world. Brought to mainland Japan in the first half the century by Gichin Funakoshi, Shotokan Karate is recognisable for its strong stances and linear strikes.
Our teachings focus on the traditional aspects of karate along with practical self defence as well as modern sport karate. Modern sport karate involves the competition aspect of karate and appeared in the 2020 Tokyo olympics.

Our philosophy at Senshikai karate is to promote both self-defence and self-development inside and outside of the dojo. Our classes are led by Dan, a dedicated martial artist with over 20 years of experience who has trained across multiple traditional styles since beginning his karate journey in 2003.
He currently holds a 4th Dan in Shotokan, a 2nd Dan in Goju-Ryu, and a 2nd Dan in Shorin-Ryu, and continues to broaden his understanding of martial arts through grappling, holding a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Dan has been coaching since 2010 and has worked with students of all ages, from Little Dragons as young as four to experienced adults, developing a coaching style that is patient, structured, and adaptable to mixed-ability groups. He is highly skilled at tailoring his teaching so that each student receives individual attention that reflects their strengths, challenges, and learning pace.
In addition to his work at Senshikai Karate, Dan has been the Head Coach of the University of Bath Karate Club since 2021, following nearly a decade of coaching alongside other senior instructors from 2012. Under their collective guidance, the club has continued to perform strongly at both regional and national competitions, with Dan playing a key role in refining kata, kumite strategy, and overall technical development.
Known for his respectful, supportive manner and an emphasis on discipline, confidence, and personal growth, Dan is deeply committed to helping students not only progress in skill, but also understand the principles, values, and spirit of martial arts. His passion for karate is reflected in every class he leads, inspiring students to train with purpose, resilience, and pride.

Yuvi assists in leading our classes alongside Daniel and brings over 13 years of dedicated karate training to the dojo. A 2nd Dan black belt in Shorin-Ryu with additional training in Shotokan, she has developed a wide technical and practical foundation through years of disciplined study under senior instructors at the University of Bath, including Dan. During her time there, she played an active role in supporting junior and beginner students, helping them prepare for grading examinations, refine kata, understand jitsu and self-defence applications, and develop confidence in both kumite and competition settings.
She now assists in leading our Little Dragons classes, where her patience, warm approach, and clear communication make her particularly effective with younger karateka, supporting their early skill-building, focus, and etiquette.
Alongside her teaching, Yuvika has competed successfully in regional and national tournaments, earning multiple medals and gaining valuable experience that informs the way she coaches students preparing for their first competitions. Her friendly, compassionate nature, attention to detail, and ability to break down complex movements into simple, meaningful learning points enrich every session.
Yuvi brings not only technical knowledge, but also genuine care and encouragement, helping students of all ages grow in confidence, discipline, and skill while contributing to the positive, supportive environment that defines Senshikai Karate.

Steve began karate at an early age, training in Wado-Ryu throughout his childhood and teenage years before returning to karate in his 20s to train Shotokan under Sensei Dan. Since then, he has shown remarkable dedication and consistency, working hard to earn his brown belt and training regularly to deepen both his technique and understanding. Steve is thoughtful, committed, and genuinely caring in the way he approaches martial arts, always striving to improve himself while supporting those around him.
Steve’s commitment to learning and helping others reflects the strength of his character. His passion for martial arts goes beyond karate; he also trains Muay Thai and MMA, holds a blue belt in BJJ, and has experience in boxing and kickboxing. He loves the discipline, progression, and continuous evolution that come with training, and he brings this same enthusiasm into every session.
Steve willingly offers his time to help students refine their techniques, build confidence, and develop discipline. His caring nature, patience, and positive attitude make him a role model for everyone at the club. Steve works closely with Sensei Dan, assisting in classes with great communication, reliability, and a genuine desire to help students succeed. His helpfulness and calm, encouraging presence make training enjoyable and meaningful for everyone.
In recent years, Steve has represented Senshikai in both kata and kumite, showing determination and skill through competition. In 2025, he began assisting with our kids’ and juniors’ classes and has found coaching both fun and fulfilling. His growing experience as a volunteer coach reflects not only his technical skill but also his genuine desire to see others progress.
We are grateful for Steve’s time, effort, and kindness, and we look forward to supporting his continued journey as both a martial artist and a mentor.
